Altered Carbon (2018-)

Set in a dystopian cyberpunk world 360 years in the future, this universe is based on the novel of the same name by Richard K. Morgan. Technology now allows the wealthy to implant their consciousness in synthetic bodies, and potentially live forever. There is lots of science fiction on this list as it makes for great 4K visuals.

American Vandal (2017-2018)

IMDB Score 8.2/10

This mockumentary series is a parody of the large number of true crime documentaries that have hit our screens in recent years. It follows bizarre vandalism crimes with the same hilarious seriousness we have come to expect from true crime shows. It mixes a genuinely absorbing mystery with thought-provoking commentary on modern entertainment.

Better Call Saul (2015-)

IMDB 8.7/10

This prequel to Breaking Bad is a god send to fans of the original show. It shows us how the likeable Saul Goodman, played by Don Odenkirk, transformed from underdog lawyer to the criminal-for-high we recognise from Breaking Bad.

The Blacklist (2013-)

This crime thriller stars James Spader as ‘Red’, a former US Navy officer turned high-profile criminal. He voluntarily surrenders to the FBI and works with them to take down some of the most dangerous criminals in the world. The characters are riveting, the implausible twists compelling, and the action entertaining.

Frontier (2016-)

IMDB Score 7.3/10

Starring Jason Momoa, this show focusses on the North American fur trade in 1700s Canada. Momoa gives a powerhouse performance as a half-Irish, half-Cree outlaw looking to enrich himself. It is action-packed, uncomplicated entertainment.

Godless (2017-)

IMDB Score 8.4/10

An American western created by Scott Frank, it stars Jack O’Connell as Ryan Goode, an injured outlaw on the run from his former boss and father figure. But just as he thinks he has found a new home, his former boss, played by Jeff Daniels, begins a reign of terror to track him down. Features strong female characters led by Michelle Docherty.

Lost in Space (2018)

IMDB Score 7.2/10

Yet another reimaging of the classic series first aired in 1965, it follows the adventures of space colonists whose spaceship veers off course. Starring Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, Maxwell Jenkins and Parker Posey, the show takes on ambitious themes as well as creating a sophisticated fantasy world.

Love, Death + Robots (2019-)

IMDB Score 8.8/10

This adult animated anthology has 18 different 20-minute stories, all produced by different casts and crews, around the themes of love, death and robots. A little old fashioned in its themes, the cutting-edge animation is beautiful, if often gory, to watch.

Stranger Things (2016-)

If you haven’t already got on board with this phenomenon, do. Created by the Duffer Brothers and starring a talented young cast, it is set in a 1980s Indiana town where strange things are happening as a psychokinetic girl helps find a missing boy.

The Umbrella Academy (2019-)

IMBD Score 8.2/10

Another superhero show based on a popular comic book series, it stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castaneda and Emmy Raver-Lampman as part of a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who come together to solve the mystery of their father’s death.


1922 (2017)

IMDB Score 6.3/10

This horror drama written and directed by Zak Hilditch stars Thomas Jane as Wilf, a man who goes to a hotel in Nebraska in order to write a confession to a crime that he committed on his family farm in 1922. The film uses character to work for the scares rather than relying on lurid surprise.

Annihilation (2018)

This science fiction horror written and directed by Alex Garland, based on the novel by Jeff Vandermeer, stars Natalie Portman as one of a group of scientists that enters a phenomenon called ‘The Shimmer’, where the rules of reality no longer apply. While delivering satisfying imaginative science fiction and horrific scares, it also manages to dive deep into some complex themes.

The Babysitter (2017)

This teen horror comedy centres of 12-year-old Cole, who gets a new babysitter, who he discovers is part of a demonic cult that has plans for him. The film is full of lots of references for any lover of the genre.

Bird Box (2018)

This film starring Sandra Bullock is set in a post-apocalyptic world tormented by some kind of malevolent supernatural entity. Seeing the entity means death. How can you survive in the world without seeing it? This is a great film, but you will be left with questions.

Bright (2017)

This David Ayer movie written by Max Landis stars Will Smith as an LAPD police officer, with an orc partner, facing racism and police corruption, in order to protect a magic wand and an elf girl who wields it. Try this unique blend of science fiction and hard-hitting cop drama for something notably different.

Extinction (2018)

Written by Spenser Cohen and Brad Kane, and directed by Ben Young, this science fiction thriller stars Michael Pena as Peter and Lizzy Caplan. Peter checks himself into a clinic because he finds himself having recurring nightmares of everyone he knows being killed by aliens. In the clinic, he discovers he is not the only one having these visions.

The Highwaymen (2019)

Starring Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as two former Texas rangers, this John Lee Hancock film sees them try to track down and apprehend the notorious criminals Bonnie and Clyde in the 1930s. This film was originally pitched by writer John Fusco many years ago as a Paul Newman, Robert Redford project.

Outlaw King (2018)

This film explores the life of Robert the Bruce, played by Chris Pine (and yes, the one we met in Braveheart). The film follows the 14th King of Scotland’s rebellion against the English Edward I in 1304, making him a rebel. Expect some impressive medieval battle scenes.

Roma (2018)

Written and directed by Alfonso Cauron, this film is set in 1970 Roma, a neighbourhood in Mexico City. Starring Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira, it follows an indigenous live-in maid for an affluent family to tell a powerful personal story. It is also visually enthralling, especially in 4K.

Triple Frontier (2019)

IMDB Score 6.5/10

This action thriller stars Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal as a group of former special ops soldiers that reunite to plan a heist against a South American crime lord. It is grim, gritty and entertaining.
