Amazon Studios is producing a Mary J. Blige documentary alongside eOne for its streaming service, Prime Video.
The documentary is yet unnamed but will follow the life and career of the Queen of Hip Hop Soul, who rose to stardom with her second album, ‘My Life.’
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs will serve as executive producer in a documentary where Blige will review her own music and life, reflecting on the person she was at the beginning of her career and the person she has become.
“The film provides a personal and never before seen look into the emotional journey of Mary J. Blige’s past struggles with poverty, abuse, addiction, and heartbreak,” says a press release.
Mary J. Blige got an Academy Award nomination for supporting actress and best original song for ‘Mudbound.’ She’s a 9-time Grammy Award winner.
“This raw and honest film follows the music legend as she heads out on a special concert tour to perform her sophomore album, My Life, for the first time ever as it approaches its 25-year anniversary. This album and its songs directly correspond to the love, motivation, passion, and healing that Mary J. Blige was experiencing then and has continued to experience through her life as an artist and human being.”
Blige and Combs will also exec produce alongside Ashaunna Ayars and Nicole Jackson of Blue Butterfly Company, Tara Long for eOne, and Mark Ford and Kevin Lopez for Creature Films. Academy Award-winning producer, Vanessa Roth will direct the documentary.
Amazon hasn’t announced a release date on Prime Video yet, but it’ll probably be around mid-2020 or so.
