We missed Hugh Laurie after Dr. House ended but HBO has brought him back to our screens. The premium cabler revealed the trailer and release date of ‘Avenue 5,’ a space comedy coming from Veep creator, Armando Iannucci.
The show will air on Sunday, January 19. Laurie stars as Ryan Clark, the captain of a luxurious space cruise with yoga classes, gourmet buffet restaurants, and spas. The official synopsis says Avenue 5 is a “space tourism comedy set 40 years in the future, when the solar system is everyone’s oyster. When the ship suddenly encounters technical difficulties, it’s up to Captain Ryan Clark (Laurie) and his crew to calm the disgruntled passengers and find a way to deal with unexpected events onboard — though they may or may not be equipped for the task.”
Josh Gad co-stars alongside Laurie as Herman Judd, the man behind the company that runs Avenue 5 and its sets of hotels and clubs. Zach Woods is Matt Spencer, the head of Avenue 5 Customer Relations. The cast is completed with Suzy Nakamura (Dr. Ken), Kyle Bornheimer (Playing House), Ethan Phillips (Star Trek: Voyager) and Nikki Amuka-Bird (Luther) round out the ensemble.
The show guest cast includes Andy Buckley, Jessica St. Clair and Kyle Bornheimer as struggling couple Mia and Doug; Neil Casey as Cyrus, a cruise engineer; Himesh Patel (Yesterday) as stand-up comedian Jordan Hatwal, and many others.
January will be a huge month for HBO. Aside from ‘Avenue 5,’ the cabler will also premiere ‘The Outsider,’ based on Stephen King’s novel, The New Pope a.k.a The Young Pope Season 2, and the 10th season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
