One of Netflix’s bread and butter, Mindhunter, is probable for its third season––leaning more towards the negative. When David Fincher, the series’ director, was asked whether the show is done or not, Fincher responded: “I think probably.” There really aren’t more reasons other than the anomalous cost vs. viewership. If you ask how many series have gone down together with that scale, you’d fill up a whole graveyard.

What’s most interesting about this was that the third season of Mindhunter was apparently put on an ‘indefinite hold’ after their stars in Holt McCallany, Jonathan Groff, and Anna Torv were all released from their contracts. Ever since then, this was the only time any recent news came up regarding the series––or Fincher talked about the future of Mindhunter as he’s been heavily promoting his very first film for the streaming giant, Mank.
“Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show,” Fincher told Vulture.
“We talked about ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.“
Basically, what’s probably going to end the series are the numbers it brings to the platform––from audience figures to the budget. Apparently, Fincher was also working endlessly to finish season after season.
“We started getting scripts for the second season [of Mindhunter], and I ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn’t like any of it. So we tossed it and started over. I brought in Courtenay Miles, an AD I’d worked with who wanted to write, and she ended up co-showrunning Mindhunter. But it’s a 90-hour work week. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.‘”
