Podcasts have grown enormously in the last couple of years, and big entertainment companies are starting to notice. Netflix will launch its first original podcast, called ‘The Only Podcast Left,” based on the universe of ‘Daybreak,’ a Netflix original show that’s set in a post-apocalyptic world.
Showrunner and screenwriter Aron Coleite will be the executive producer.
The podcast will consist of 6 episodes and its starting point will be the same as the show’s, as a group of teenagers decides to start recording a podcast during Daybreak’s apocalypse and will complement the show’s plot.
“Netflix is an amazing creative partner. When they asked us to do a narrative podcast in the world, we came back with the most insane idea we could think of and they didn’t even blink. In fact, they got even more excited about what we were trying to create,” said Coleite in an interview.
The podcast will air from November 7, exclusively on Spotify until December 12, when it’ll be accessible on other platforms.
“We love how podcasts give creators more freedom to explore and go deeper into elements of their stories, and we see original scripted podcasts as the next level in world exploration. With ‘Daybreak,’ it’s a world ripe for that,” Rae Votta, podcast lead for the Netflix, said.
“We’re thrilled that Netflix is partnering with to exclusively bring the ‘Daybreak’ podcast to the show’s fans around the world,” Lauren Jarvis, chief of content partnerships for Spotify added.
Netflix already has a couple of unscripted podcasts, but this is their first scripted incursion, depending on how it goes, we may start seeing some podcast spinoffs of some of their original shows.
