Netflix releases most-popular titles of 2019

Netflix made an unusual data release. The streaming service unveiled its most popular titles of 2019 in different categories: films, TV shows, non-fiction, specials, and more. The 2019 overall list was topped by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston-led ‘Murder Mystery‘ of which a sequel is already in production.

The comedy is followed by the third season of Stranger Things, Michael Bay’s 6 Underground, The Incredibles 2, Martin Scorsese Oscar hopeful, The Irishman, The Witcher, Triple Frontier Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, The Umbrella Academy, and The Highwaymen.

Netflix did not reveal its methodology, it is said to be based on the total number of accounts that have watched at least two minutes of a production (series, film, documentary, or special) during its first 28 days on the platform in 2019. For recent releases such as The Witcher, the ranking is based on projections that come from the initial sample.

Facing tough competition in the streaming world, which made Netflix lose a ton of movies, the streamer received some pleasant news: 9 of its 10 most-watched movies are original productions, headlined by Murder Mystery. The comedy is the first production of the four-film deal the streaming service struck with Sandler, which has been renewed for four more since.

Netflix revealed top 10 lists in 7 categories: Film, TV series, non-fiction, documentary, comedy special, international, and family series. Murder Mystery was the most-watched film, as we said before. Stranger Things Season 3 headlined the TV Series; Tidying Up with Marie Kondo was the #1 in non-fiction, The Ted Bundy Tapes in documentary, Dave Chappelle: Stick & Stones in comedy special, Mighty Little Bheem in international, and Raising Dion in family.

Some surprises were not seeing ‘The Crown,’ or ‘Black Mirror’ among the top series, ‘Marriage Story’ among the most popular films or ‘Élite’ in the international top 10.
